UMA FUTSAL LEAGUE 6-A- SIDE COMPETITION

UMA FUTSAL LEAGUE 6-A- SIDE COMPETITION

Kingston, Jamaica – January 25, 2017: On Thursday, October 27, 2016, UWI Marketing Association hosted its first ever Futsal League 6-A- Side competition held on the Mona campus at Towers’ Courtyard. This sporting event was an innovative idea conceptualised by the UMA team who wanted to actively engage students, while raising funds to support Breast Cancer Awareness through the Jamaica Cancer Society.

The competition began with registration at 10:00a.m. by Towers’ Courtyard, which was heavily decorated with sponsored feather banners and barriers around the court. The sponsors of the Futsal competition included Digicel, SportsMax, Island Bet, Western Sports, JN WAY, SLEEK, Pepsi, Nescafe and Bad Dawg.

Seven teams, represented by young men from all over, participated in the knockout competition. Spectators were anxious to see which two teams would qualify and go head-to- head to earn the first place title and win cash and prizes valued over JMD$60,000.

The finals did not seem to disappoint the many patrons who were in attendance, as the game became a see saw battle between the two finalists: Team Island Bet and Team DAJ. The match ended in a penalty shoot-out with Team DAJ taking the glory.

The winning side was awarded a SportsMax trophy, Digicel credit valued at $20,000 and the JN cash prize of $40,000. The leading goal scorer won the Golden Boots award and received a gift certificate for boots courtesy of Western Sports. The 2 nd place team, Island Bet received Digicel credit valued at $10,000 and a cash prize of $15,000.

The Futsal competition garnered support and allowed the UWI Marketing Association to make a monetary donation to the Jamaica Cancer Society. With greater support, UMA intends to host the Futsal League competition as an annual fund raising event.
