09 Nov College Students Host Fundraising Cooler Fête
Kingston, Jamaica – Wednesday, November 9, 2016: Capitalising on the typical college student’s love for partying, the UWI Marketing Association is throwing a fete to raise funds for much-needed financial grants to students studying Marketing at the University this Saturday, November 12. This fundraising initiative is now in its second year.
From the first staging of the event in 2015, the UWI Marketing Association raised enough funds to award a grant of $50,000 to one student. This year, the association has doubled its efforts, with the goal of securing enough funds to offer at least two grants this year.
“I am very grateful that UMA saw the need to offer a grant to marketing students, specifically,” shared 21-year old Latanya Martin, the recipient of the 2015 grant. “This helped to take a lot of the financial stress off my parents and I felt it really encouraging because it seemed like a reward for all my hard work.”
Martin is currently in 3rd year, completing a Bachelors in Marketing and Entrepreneurship. According to Trevor Smith, Head of Marketing in the Faulty of Social Sciences at the University, “We unreservedly support this initiative as marketing has proven time and time again to be the main conduit of an organisation’s success,” he said. “I endorse this bold move as this is a very creative way of cementing the relevance of the club and I would encourage other clubs to undertake similar type initiatives that can go a far way in assisting needy students and boosting expansion and growth.” The event, which will take the format of the now popular cooler fête, will be hosted at the Sandpit in the UWI Mona Bowl. Popular DJs ZJ Chrome and Chromatic will be at the turntables and gates open at 6 pm.
