All Set For CB Group/UWI 5K

The second CB Group/University of the West Indies (UWI) 5K is set for Sunday, November 17, at the UWI Bowl in Mona, starting at 7 a.m.

Starting this year, title sponsor Caribbean Broilers has committed to a three-year deal worth $9 million. At last year’s inaugural staging, 2,500 persons participated and $18 million was raised and 20 students were recipients of scholarship awards at UWI. This year, the organisers hope to raise even more money.

“The event will take place on November 17 at UWI starting at 7 a.m. promptly. No event has ever raised so much money in the inaugural year. We had hoped to raise $6 or $7 million and we got $18 million. That was a big success,” Alfred ‘Frano’ Francis, CB/UWI 5K race director, said during the press launch on Thursday at the Usain Bolt Track, UWI Bowl, Mona.

In giving details on the rules of the 5K, Francis said: “You must have at least five persons to complete a group for team awards. Each person must wear their assigned bib. They are not transferable.”

Entry fee

The entry fee for the 5K is $1,000 per participant.

Matthew Lyn, chief operating officer of the CB Group, encouraged individuals and companies to participate in order to assist academic and sports students at UWI.

“We encourage individuals and companies to participate, as you can run or walk. If you can’t participate, you can donate,” Lyn said.

Meanwhile, Thalia Lyn, CEO of Island Grill, disclosed that there will be the inaugural staging of the Kids 2K, also on November 17 at UWI Bowl, Mona.

We are going to have a special 2K for the 7-14 age group. We need a sponsor for the event. We are promoting a healthy lifestyle among kids. It’s an inaugural event, the first of its kind,” Thalia Lyn announced.

There were cheque presentations by National Baking Company and Scotiabank, worth $1 million each. Island Grill and Dunlop Corbin are also sponsors of the 5K run.

The recipients of scholarships at UWI received their certificates. They are: D’Andre Alexander, Latoya Duffus, Alfred Fullwood, Isha Levy, Clifton Thompson, Ashi Alexander, Jovanny Clarke, Shaquina Francis, Jordan Hazle, Demoy Henry, Jason Hylton, Shanice Mullings, Zaavan Richards, Jhacia Salmon, Michael Stone, Danielle Sutherland, Akeem Thenstead, Crystal Walters, and Katherine Wynter.
